Section 1.
In this section, you will learn some market insights.
Gaming is still one of the largest entertainment markets in the world. According to Newzoo’s Global Games Market Report, players spent $201.6 billion on games in 2025, the first year the market passed the $200 billion mark (GamesBeat coverage of the report). PC revenue grew 12% year over year, mobile 10.7% and console 2.8%, while spending on microtransactions fell 4.6%.
The audience is also much broader than the “teenager in a bedroom” stereotype. The Entertainment Software Association’s 2025 Essential Facts report says more than 205 million Americans play video games, and 28% of players are 50 or older.
What does that mean for you as a niche entrepreneur? Two things. First, “gamers” are not one audience: there are parents choosing games for their kids, adults who play on their commute, retro collectors, competitive players and people shopping for hardware. Second, the money comes from very different buyers, so choosing who you serve matters more than choosing “gaming”.

One more thing has changed since I first published this report: many people searching for “gaming niche” today are creators choosing a focus for a YouTube, Twitch or TikTok channel. If that’s you, I cover channel ideas in my guides to YouTube gaming niches and TikTok niches. This report focuses on the business side: websites, products and services.
Lastly, I suggest looking at this post to understand better what a niche market is and how to take advantage of it.
Section 2.
In this section, I will analyze the current trends in this niche.
Market niche trends can help you identify how a market is doing. In addition, they allow you to see the interest in a certain topic over time.
When analyzing trends for a niche, it is vital to study the interest over time- If the interest fluctuates a lot with periods going down to zero, it normally would be a bad sign. However, if the trend stays up and is stable or growing, it could be a good sign. There are other factors to consider as well. More on this later.
To analyze trends in the gaming niche, I will use the Google Trends tool. When using this tool, there are a few distinctions to take into account:
‘Topics‘ can be great to find out the interest of people in a niche. The idea would be to use ‘topics’ to find niches that are worth pursuing. Then, you should use ‘search terms‘ as the first step towards content creation. This will help you understand if it is worth creating content on a given term based on current trends.
For this report, I am analyzing the topic ‘Gaming.’ Then, I have set the location worldwide and filtered it by the past five years.
There are a few things we can observe from the graphic below (captured when I first researched this niche in December 2021):

By looking at this graph, one could think that a gaming business could work based on the trend numbers. However, to avoid fierce competition in this niche, you should niche down and find sub-niche and micro-niche ideas.
So how do you find profitable sub-niche and micro-niche ideas with fewer competitors? With proper niche research.
But we’ll get into that in the following sections. For now, you can read in this post all the advantages of niche marketing.
Lastly, you can find some more useful information just below the Google Trends graphic such as related topics and queries. These could provide you with great insights as to which gaming niche you should choose or simply relevant topics where people will have an interest.

Section 3.
Learn how to find a niche step by step.
There are many methods you can use to find out exciting sub-niches ideas. The simplest one might be a combination of Wikipedia with Google Suggest to find ideas. Then you can use Google Trend to validate your plan.
This is how to do it:
Step #1. Head to Wikipedia, and in the search bar, type your niche keyword and hit search.

Step #2. Skim the page for sub-niche ideas. You’ll be able to find plenty of gaming-related keywords along with the Wikipedia page.
Some places where to look include the table of content, content itself, and the “see also” section at the bottom.
Also, when you click on a gaming-related term with a link, it will take you to another page where you’ll be able to find even more ideas. So this is an excellent method to brainstorm keywords and sub-niche ideas.

Step #3. Next, you can complete these sub-niche ideas or get some more with Google Search. Head to Google.com and enter some of your niche keywords. Google will instantly suggest some sub-niches for you.

You can even keep niching them down as you type:

This is a very effective and easy trick to find sub-niche and micro-niche ideas quickly.
Step #4. Lastly, use Google Trends to validate your niche idea. For this example, I will check “gaming laptop.“
The graphic below shows how this trend is still increasing in popularity over time. This is a good beginning, however, we’ll need to check the competence next before choosing a very competitive niche. More on this in the next sections.

Additionally, you can also include in the Google Trends search bar a few terms from your Google suggestions or your Wikipedia keywords to visually compare your ideas.
For this example, I have used gaming laptop, indie games, and cloud gaming.

As you can see, all these trends seem pretty stable, with a dominant interest in “gaming laptop”. This will probably mean it will also be way more competitive.
Normally, the higher the interest over time, the higher the competence as well. So it is vital to find a sub-niche or micro-niche in the sweet spot between search volume and commercial value. I suggest you check micro niche blogging in 10 practical steps to overcome this issue.
In any case, this is a very effective method to find sub-niche and micro-niche ideas in any industry quickly.
Lastly, note that trends that are just starting to grow are the ones with the most potential. It could be a new market blooming, meaning the competition is inexistent or limited.
So do not drop ideas only because trends show low numbers. If the trend’s interest is exponentially growing and it gets stable, it is probably worth pursuing.
Section 4.
In this section, you will learn how competitive this niche is and its opportunities.
As in any niche with demand, competition in the high-level niche can be harsh. Big corporations typically dominate the internet for competitive terms in popular niches. And entrepreneurs like us simply don’t have the resources to compete against them.
That is why sub-niches and micro-niches are much better options- The more you niche down, the smaller the competence. But if you go too niche, you might face another issue: That the market might be too small.
The only way to know is by analyzing keywords directly related to your sub-niche or micro-niche ideas. This is how you’ll see if the main keywords you want to target are too competitive or there are still opportunities with less competitive terms.
To perform keyword research, you will need access to an SEO tool. Here you can find how to do it with Keysearch and SE ranking.
For this section, I will use SE Ranking, which provides a 14-day trial so you can do the same. You can refer to my niche keyword research post for more details.
For this example, I checked ‘cloud gaming’, which was a trending topic when I first wrote this report. The screenshots below are from that original research in December 2021.
To have an idea about the overall competition in this niche, we’ll look for this exact term with the SEO tool.

As you can see from the image, this term difficulty is “challenging” with a great search volume of 18.1k and $1,78 CPC
September 2026 update: I re-checked the term with Google Ads data for the US. “Cloud gaming” now gets around 301,000 searches a month with a $3.53 CPC. Interest has grown a lot since 2021, which makes the head term even harder for a small site and the long-tail approach below even more important.
But what does this information really means?
This initial search is just is to have a quick overview of the potential market regarding search volume (interest) and the difficulty of this niche. By checking the exact niche keyword, you can quickly learn how competitive a term is and also about the audience size. But ultimately, you still need to check your niche competitors in detail to better understand your direct competitors.
In summary, in this initial search, you could see this term is very competitive, so you’ll need to niche down to find less competitive keywords.
Once you have checked your niche competitors and assessed the competence level, you can easily find profitable niche keywords with low competition and a decent search volume with a few tweaks:
Step #1. Search for your niche keyword. For this example, I’ll stick to the previous example ‘cloud gaming.’
Step #2. In the panel on the left, click on the keyword suggestions icon.

Step #3. Next, click on ‘filter‘ and set the values you want. In my case, I want something with a search volume over 200, and difficulty under 40. Then click on ‘Apply filters.’

Step #4. Now I have a list with 15 keywords with a lower difficulty score and great search volume even for such a competitive niche.

Looking at this example and the keywords found, you could easily assess if you can find enough topics to create a profitable business in the cloud gaming niche.
You might and should run different search queries looking for related terms as well to make sure you’ll find enough keywords that can drive you traffic and money.
In summary, this list shows that with the right keywords, you could create a profitable niche website even in a competitive niche. You just need to find those less competitive terms and create amazing content.

Section 5.
In this section, you will learn different ways to monetize this niche.
There are several ways you can monetize your gaming niche website.
But what works best is to adapt your strategy to the user intent. For instance, if your niche blog is about ‘cloud gaming,‘ an affiliate marketing website promoting services and accessories might be a great choice to monetize.
The idea is to adopt a solution to your audience’s problem in the best format. Also, most of the time, online businesses adopt more than one monetization method.
I suggest you check this post about niche blogging to learn how to create a niche website step by step with tips to monetize it. Alternatively, a YouTube channel can help you make money with all the methods below. So I suggest you check the best Youtube niches.
Some methods you can use to make money in the gaming niche are:
Services can be a lucrative way to monetize gaming niche websites. In fact, the big money in this niche is on service providers.
Some of the services you can provide are:
Depending on your selected niche, some services might work better than others.
Some of these services are local, like console and controller repair, but many can be delivered online: coaching for one competitive game, stream setup and overlay design, or playtesting and community management for indie studios. Skills like streaming or game development can also be taught live in small groups before you turn them into a course.
You could even create online courses to help a targeted audience by providing valuable training.
Some website examples that monetize by providing gaming services are:

Products in the gaming niche are probably one of the best solutions to make money.
For instance, some products you could create are:
When you present the right product to the right audience, products can be the easiest way to start making money. They also allow you to earn a passive income when you combine them with an evergreen sales funnel.
Some gaming blog examples selling products are:

Subscriptions and memberships can make a great alternative to monetize your website.
Subscriptions are based on delivering extra value to your readers. This could be access to a premium section, deliver new content only to subscribers, and things like that.
Also, you can get recurring income from memberships. But you need to keep providing value to your readers constantly. This could be by delivering relevant content in the form of a magazine, weekly videos, podcasts, or something valuable to your readers.
Recurring revenue through paid communities often outperforms one-off product sales in lifetime value. Tiered access — premium content, member-only Q&As, exclusive resources, or community spaces — works especially well when there’s a clear value gap between free and paid. Start small with one tier and let your most engaged readers tell you what else they’d pay for.
Some website examples using these methods are:
Ads used to be one of the most common ways to monetize websites. However, there are some downsides with them:
Having said so, many businesses use ads as their primary source of income. You could use platforms like Google AdSense or Media.net at the start, and premium ad management networks once your traffic qualifies for them.
In any case, you could place ads just for extra income rather than the primary source of income.

This is my favorite method to make money online in any niche.

Section 6.
In this section, I will provide you with some profitable niche ideas.
After putting into practice what I have explained in this report and researching some keywords, I have collected a list of sub-niches and micro-niches in the gaming niche that can do a great online business.
I personally recommend focusing on sub-niches or micro-niches where trends are steady even though the volume is not high since they probably will be the ones with fewer competitors—that is why niche blogging is so powerful. If you find good enough keywords, you will monetize more easily and faster.
Lastly, what makes a profitable niche is the commercial value behind the keywords you choose. So if you just choose keywords without commercial value which are more informational, you might struggle to generate an income (although you can still do it.)
You will also need to do thorough niche keyword research and develop a list of keywords and then plan your content creation strategy thoroughly if you want to succeed.
To refresh this report, I pulled current US search volumes and cost-per-click for the main gaming sub-niches (Google Ads data, September 2026). “Searches/mo” is how many people search the head term each month in the US; CPC hints at how much advertisers will pay for that visitor, which is a rough signal of buyer intent.
| Keyword | Searches/mo | CPC ($) | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| cloud gaming | 301,000 | 3.53 | Affiliate (services), news |
| gaming laptop | 301,000 | 0.99 | Affiliate reviews |
| handheld gaming pc | 301,000 | 0.36 | Affiliate reviews |
| mobile gaming | 201,000 | 0.62 | Guides, ads |
| retro gaming | 74,000 | 1.02 | Guides, affiliate, merch |
| minecraft server hosting | 74,000 | 4.82 | Hosting affiliate, tutorials |
| vr games | 49,500 | 1.29 | Reviews, affiliate |
| gaming news | 40,500 | 4.10 | Ads, memberships |
| speedrun | 40,500 | 0.26 | Video, community |
| indie games | 33,100 | 3.08 | Curation, newsletter, ads |
| gaming setup | 22,200 | 0.32 | Affiliate (desks, chairs) |
| cozy games | 12,100 | 1.79 | Curation, newsletter, ads |
| steam deck accessories | 6,600 | 1.18 | Affiliate reviews |
| game guides | 6,600 | 0.50 | Guides, ads |
| game reviews | 4,400 | 0.15 | Reviews, ads |
| gaming merch | 880 | 1.96 | Print on demand, ecommerce |
| game modding | 720 | 0.51 | Tutorials, community |
| esports coaching | 480 | 50.61 | Coaching services |
| twitch streaming tips | 320 | 0.11 | Courses, services |
| gaming affiliate programs | 170 | 4.42 | Affiliate education |
A few things stand out. Head terms like “gaming laptop” or “handheld gaming PC” are huge, but retailers and big publishers own them, so a small site should aim at the long-tail questions underneath. “Minecraft server hosting” and “esports coaching” have high CPCs for their size, a sign that people are ready to pay. And audiences like cozy games, retro gaming and indie games are large enough to support a focused site without competing head-on with the giants.

I removed the old list of 50+ ideas and kept the ones I would actually research today. Each of these has a clear audience and at least one realistic way to make money; validate it with the keyword steps above before you commit.
The gaming niche covers any business or content built around video games: websites, YouTube or Twitch channels, products, services and communities. Because it is so large, most successful projects focus on a sub-niche, such as one game, one platform or one type of player.
The broad niche is crowded, and head terms like “gaming laptop” are dominated by retailers and big publishers. Sub-niches are a different story: a site about cozy games, retro collecting or accessible gaming competes with far fewer serious players.
Yes, if you pick a specific angle. Video suits gameplay, tutorials and entertainment, while a blog works well for guides, comparisons and buying advice. Many gaming creators combine both, using the website to capture search traffic for guides and reviews.
Mostly through affiliate links (hardware, accessories and games), display ads, memberships, services like coaching, and their own products such as guides or merch. The best fit depends on the sub-niche: hardware niches lean on affiliates, while news and guides lean on ads.
Look for audiences with steady interest but few dedicated sites: cozy games, retro console repair, accessible gaming, gaming for older adults or guides for a single game. Check demand and competition with the keyword research steps in this report before you start.

The gaming market passed $200 billion in 2025 and keeps opening new opportunities for small, focused projects. I suggest you focus on some of the micro-niches ideas in this post to increase your chances of succeeding.
Going sub-niche or micro-niche, you might have fewer customers, but your audience will be most likely to find you. This will also help you grow your website authority faster and start making money quicker!
